[V2C8] Director Hegelich is Strong (Run Away if You Fight Him)
Translated by Jodas 2: Daily Lives of a New Teacher and the Apprentice MagesThe apprentices were told to gather at a room on the first floor of the First Spire “White Smoke.”
There was a black board at the front of the room. When Tia asked “What is that?” Sevil told her it was called a ‘blackboard’ and that you could write words on it.
She also mentioned that rooms for learning like this were called ‘classrooms.’
“A lot of people are coming in to this classroom.”
The classroom contained large desks, big enough for three people to sit at them, arranged in two rows of four, for a total of eight.
Tia liked being close to the window, so she sat at the seat closest to the window. Beside her sat Sophie and Ella, whom she had just met. Wren and Sevil sat at the desk behind her.
Eventually, other students entered the classroom. Including Tia, there were twelve in all. All of them were apprentice mages just like Tia.
She hadn’t talked to some of them yet, so she decided to introduce herself. Greetings were important, after all.
However, before Tia could deliver her greetings, the door at the front of the room opened, and the mages of the Guidance Office entered. There were a total of five of them. At the front walked the blond man with a bowl cut and glasses she’d seen at the exam, Hegelich; and Röhm with her short bangs.
“Piyo. Direc-tor Hegelich! Good morning!”
“Hm.” Hegelich nodded slightly at Tia’s cheerful greeting.
“No need for pleasantries. Everyone who passed is here, yes?”
Hegelich looked around the room and confirmed that all of the successful applicants were present. “Very good,” he nodded.
“I shall now explain to the twelve of you who passed the Wedge Tower’s entrance examination the details going forward and divide you into classes.”
What does he mean divide us into classes? Tia wondered.
If this room was a class room, would that mean everyone was going to take a piece of this room?
“But first, I would like to congratulate you all on passing the entrance examination.”
“Piyopp! Thank you!”
Tia cheerfully gave her thanks. Thanks were important.
“Ahem.” Hegelich cleared his throat, and lifted his round glasses with a finger.
“There’s no need to say your thanks. Please allow me to finish, you.”
“Okaaay!”
“The Wedge Tower is the Empire’s first line of defense against Monsters coming from the Crystal Territory. Keep that duty in mind as you consider what path to follow as a mage and study well.”
Then, Hegelich took a step back.
In his place, the fluffy brown-haired young woman with short bangs, Röhm, stepped forward.
“Then, I will explain what we will be doing from here on out. But first, I want to let you know that we will be referring to all of you by your first names going forward.”
The mages of the Wedge Tower typically referred to each other by their family names such as Hegelich And Röhm.
However, there was a tradition whereby apprentices would call each other by their given names.
“This is to help you reevaluate yourselves, regardless of what family you were born into, and consider the type of mage you will become.”
Several people in the room reacted visibly to Röhm’s words. Sevil as well seemed to be enjoying this.
(Sevil is the Emperor’s sister…… I think that means she’s a princess? Or something?)
Sevil’s name was very long, and most of the other people called her Princess Adelheid.
However, Sevil said she would rather be called Sevil instead of Princess Adelheid.
Sevil must like the name Sevil.
“Following on, next is about where you will be going from here. For the next year, you all will learn the basic magics of the Wedge Tower as mage apprentices. After a year, you will enter one of the other Offices.”
Saying that, Röhm wrote a string of letters on the blackboard.
First Spire: White Smoke
General Affairs, Finance, Guidance, Medical (Second Branch)
Second Spire: Golden Needle
Protection, Extermination, Investigation, Medical (Main)
Third Spire: Water Bubble
Maintenance, Management, Library, Medical (First Branch)
Staring at those words, Tia remembered the first time she came to the Wedge Tower.
(Now that I think about it, there were three of those huge towers…..)
At the moment, Tia and the others were in the First Spire: White Smoke.
The one closer to the entrance was the Second Spire: Golden Needle, responsible for combat duties.
The one furthest to the back, responsible for managing tomes and magical devices was the Third Spire: Water Bubble.
Then, inside of each Spire, it seemed like there were rooms set up for more specific tasks.
“We will explain further about each Office later on, but I want you to start thinking now about which one you want to join.”
That would be difficult, Tia thought.
Tia only cared about learning flight magic and flying around. She hadn’t thought about anything past that.
Tia’s only goal was to learn flight magic within a year, then return home to Breakneck Gorge.
(I wonder if Wren and Sevil are thinking properly about this…….They probably are, both of them are really smart.)
“Next, about the lessons you will take for the next year.”
Röhm wrote the words ‘Group Lessons’ and ‘Individual Lessons’ in a blank space of the blackboard.
“You will take lessons from four of us instructors, including myself.”
Beside the words Individual Lessons, Röhm added more words.
Röhm Classroom
Sombart Classroom
Armster Classroom
Hütter Classroom
It looked like each of the classrooms shared the name of their instructor.
“In the morning, you all will attend group lessons in this classroom here, then in the afternoon, you will take individual lessons from your assigned instructor. Then, the class assignments will be as follows…..”
“Hold on a second!”
Röhm’s words were cut short by a girl with orange hair tied into two braids wearing a pointy hat—the one that had been in a fight at the dining hall this morning.
Sophie, sitting next to Tia, whispered quietly.
“That’s Roswitha Ohlendorf. Her family’s famous in the Classical School…..”
“Classical School? Pirorororo…….”
Tia tilted her head from side to side. Classical School, that was a word she didn’t understand.
This time Ella taught her in a whisper.
“That means mages who use magic from the old era and earlier. There are a lot of families with long histories in the Classical School.”
Ella shared a room with Roswitha, so it seemed she was concerned for her. Nervously, she watched Roswitha and her pointy hat.
Roswitha glared at the four instructors and made a loud declaration.
“I have no intention of learning any magecraft that isn’t from the Classical School.”
“We took that into consideration when dividing up the classes, you.”
The Director, Hegelich, cut in with a strict expression.
“There are four Instructors this year. Among them, Ms. Röhm and Mr. Armster have performed research into both Modern and Classical magecraft. You will be in Röhm’s class.”
“…..Are there no instructors that specialize in Classical Magic?”
“Classical mages are extremely rare.”
For some reason, Roswitha’s face became more upset.
The tips of her eyes shot up, and she questioned Hegelich.
“Is the reason there are no Classical mages in the Guidance Office that you, the Director, is a mage of the Modern School?”
“You’ve said too much, Miss Roswitha.”
The eyes behind Hegelich’s round glasses narrowed.
That was the kind of glare that strong creatures gave off.
“I’m not a fan of that sort of pointless squabbling. Do you understand?”
At that point, Tia felt goosebumps on the back of her neck.
Director Hegelich was a strong person. If they were in the middle of the forest, and if Tia could fly, she would immediately fly away from him.
Even Roswitha, who had a chance of winning, was taken aback, as she closed her mouth without giving a rebuttal.
“Hmph.” Hegelich scoffed, and spoke with the sharpness of a needle.
“As the Director of the Guidance Office, I am responsible for determining the content of your instruction. If you are dissatisfied with my direction, then you are free to pack your bags and leave—No one will stop you.”
His last line was spoken with a cold finality.
Surely, the girl named Roswitha was confident in her magic.
Regardless, Hegelich’s implication that he would drive out any who don’t follow his direction was spoken with steeled resolve.
“……My apologies.”
Roswitha dutifully apologized, and said nothing more.
Hegelich returned his gaze to Röhm. Röhm nodded back, and continued her explanation.
“Then, I will announce the class assignments. Afterwards, you will proceed to your assigned instructor’s classroom.”
